Few photographs of Civil War battle scenes exist because camera shutter speeds weren't fast enough yet to capture movement, so it was left to combat artists to produce quick sketches while the fighting raged.

The director of the documentary "Robert E. Lee" (for the PBS series American Experience) needed a period style sketch of General Lee riding on horseback past the burning Mumma House with Confederate troops during the battle of Antietam for use on air. That's the sketch I produced at right.
